Holiday parties are fun to attend, and can be fun to host, so long as they are properly planne
d. Improperly planned parties are stressful and nerve wracking for the hosts. Holiday party planning is not difficult or very time consuming; a few simple steps will insure that both the guests and the hosts will enjoy the event. One of the main points that drive other choices about a holiday party is a very simple one - which holiday is being celebrated? Most hosts must take seasonal weather into consideration when making a decision about where the party will be hosted.

Once the host has decided whether the party will be held inside or outdoors and at home or at another facility, the real planning can begin. Knowing the size and capacity of the venue allows decisions about how many guests can be invited. For home parties, it is wise to remember that guests tend to feel more welcome to bring additional people when a party is held in a home. Also, at home holiday party planning needs to include some consideration of where guests can park. Neighbors are often willing to share space if approached politely and well in advance.

Parties that will be held outside the home can be less stressful for the hosts, but there are plans that must be set well in advance. The venue must be reserved, naturally, and food and drink catering or supply contracted. Deposits must be paid on the venue and for the refreshments. It is also necessary that the host make sure that any security concerns are addressed, that wait staffing is arranged, and that any entertainment is booked and ready. Holiday party planning food choices have a huge impact on budget; luncheons or hors d'oeuvres only are naturally less expensive than full dinners.

It is wise to give a lot of consideration to the timing of the party. Afternoon parties are, by definition, less formal than evening events. It is also a good idea, when holiday party planning, to consider a party that is just a bit 'off schedule' - a holiday party in early December or January may well be better attended than one within a week or two of Christmas. In addition, venues, caterers, musicians, wait staff and every other party provider will almost definitely charge less at these times.
